The Beauty of Taiwan

Last weekend we had a great weekend of somethings different. Of course we still had to go to our hash run, but something new about it was a run through the city and also a pool BBQ at the end. We ran in places that Allie and I have never been. Most of it was through the old section of the city where there was less traffic and cool side streets. It was really hot that day so it was nice to be able to jump into a cold pool even with a swim cap. After swimming around and cooling off for a while we had a pot luck cook out. Everyone brought something different from guacamole to fried noodles. The meat was brought by a hasher that works at a restaurant so we had baby back ribs, German

sausage, and real marinated steaks. Needless to say I ate way to much and Allie was hurting a little too. We already had plans to meet some of our co-teachers (Chinese teachers) at a local bar where we had a really good time. It was really nice to hang out with them since we are going home soon. It is going to be sad when we leave because we have made a lot of really good friend and are really enjoying the life that we have made here.

The next week was short, we had Friday and Saturday off for Double Tenth Day which is the equivalent to Taiwan's independence day even though a lot of the world don't recognize it as a seperate country from China. We left at 12 midnight on Thursday night with 4 other friends, one South African (Lauren), one Australian (Brian). and two from Boston area (Jon and Nick). We were off to Orchid Island also known as Lanyu. It is south east of Taiwan. We left late at night and had an intense journey down to Kenting to take the ferry, which left at 8 the next morning. The journey consisted of waiting at Mos Burger for 3 hours in the middle of the night for our ride, then taking a very cramped van to the port, and then taking a 2 hour boat ride (which was one of the roughest rides ever, with people throwing up all around us). Finally we were there and the beauty alone was worth the hassel. It was amazing, very green and volcanic, it reminded me a lot of what the Hawaiian islands look like. The island also had a lot of goats, they were everywhere and very cute. Since we had the entire day on Friday we all rented scooters and then went to our campsite. Which was in the middle of a schools track. And it was perfect. Close to the water and nice comfortable grass to set our tent in. We went swimming to the beach for a while and then took a scooter trip around the island which is about 50km long so we did about half. We drove a very steep road to the weather center on top of the highest mountain and enjoyed a beautiful view. That night we met some other people camping and decieded to raid the only local supermarket for all the pork and some fish that they had so that we could have a campfire on the beach. It was awesome..people from all over the island ended up coming for a good feast and relaxing. Unfortunately we were all very exhausted from basically not sleeping well for the past 36 hours and we headed to bed at about 9 pm. Jay and I woke up early the next morning for a run. Then we all rented snorkeling equipment and enjoyed the coral. THe current is really strong around the island and we couldn't venture out too far otherwise we would have a difficult time swimming back to shore. Brian decieded to go out a little far and we couldn't see him... eventually we spotted him far out and looking as though he was having a difficult time getting back. Jay went out to help since he is a good swimmer and on the way he spotted a manoray....which is somewhat like a stingray. I was so jealous... ButI guess that was his reward for going to help out Brian. We enjoyed another scooter trip to the other side of the island and watched the sunset. We ate dinner at a very cute restuarant called the Epicurean and it was amazing with very good food. We had another early night and the next morning we had one more quick snorkle and went back on the ferry home. When we arrived in Kenting after the ferry, we had arranged a driver to pick us up..it turned out to be the taxi ride from hell. He seemed to pop a beatle nut in every 20 minutes and he never spit. He was driving like a mad man mainly whizing by cars in the scooter lane most of the time. People were rolling down their windows screaming at him. I felt as if I was in a Formula One race... and I didn't feel like we were winning. Anyways it was an amazing time and really recommend it. Taiwan is really beautiful in some places. This gave us the boost we need to make our final stretch to the end.

Bali’s beach boys reject gigolo slur

Bali’s beach boys reject gigolo slurKUTA, Indonesia (AFP) – Fun-loving local beach boys are as much a fixture and, for some women, an attraction of Bali as the sun and surf, but all that could be about to change thanks to a controversial new film.

The documentary, Cowboys in Paradise by Singapore-based writer and director Amit Virmani, sparked panic among Bali’s tourism officials when it was released at a film festival in South Korea earlier this month.

Its candid interviews with the local men who flirt with and seduce foreign tourists has severely tarnished the resort island’s image, officials say.

“Certainly it’s worrying. We’ll take action so the image of Bali as a spiritual island isn’t tainted,” Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika told reporters.

Police have rounded up almost 30 of the so-called beach “cowboys” in a bid to “clean up the beach of prostitution”, Bali police spokesman Gede Sugianyar said.

Some of the men at the centre of the brouhaha said they were distressed and angry at being hounded as gigolos, and flatly denied offering sexual favours for money.

“I’m stressed by the raids. I wonder if the authorities are coming after me next,” 29-year-old surf instructor Rosnan Efendi told AFP.

“I’m also angry the filmmaker twisted the story. We were told it was a documentary about love and relationships between locals and foreigners,” he added.

Well-built, tanned and sporting shoulder-length wavy hair, Efendi said he met his German girlfriend on the beach four years ago and fell in love.

“We’re together because of love, not money. When we go out, we split the bills. She doesn’t pay for me,” he said.

“The documentary is a lie. There’s no such thing as Kuta cowboys or Bali gigolos.”

Another surf instructor, 53-year-old Bobbi, who claims to be a sort of mentor for Kuta’s beach boys, said: “We’re friendly people so we chat with everybody including female tourists. What’s wrong with joking, laughing, giving massages to one another after a tiring day of surfing? It’s nothing more than that”.

Laughing heartily, he added: “If the beach boys charged money for befriending tourists they’d all be rich by now. It’s unlikely since they can’t even buy themselves a meal without getting into debt”.

Filmmaker Virmani said he was “extremely disheartened” over the police raids and insisted his documentary was an attempt to deconstruct the image of the beach gigolo.

“All they did was speak honestly about their lives. No one should be harmed for that,” he said.

“I wanted to understand the men behind the cowboy myth. People never got past looking at them as gigolos. That’s so one dimensional. I wanted to know why they are so appealing to women? What are their relationships like?… I wanted to humanise them.

“I personally believe the beach would be a very dull place without their friendliness.”

An American woman tourist interviewed in the documentary — segments of which have been posted across the Internet after appearing on YouTube — said the beach boys just “love to have fun”.

“The women that come… what they’re feeling is that these people feel safe to them and they love to have fun. They’ll get out and sing and dance and joke and they’ll include you in everything,” she said.

Another woman, an Australian, told the documentary-makers: “There’s a lot of frustrated Western women out there. Just look at the sales of ‘Eat, Pray, Love’,” referring to Elizabeth Gilbert’s romantic memoir of self-discovery.

“Women don’t want to be women anymore and instead they want to be feminine, so I can understand why they come here and they’re searching for something and suddenly this environment provides that.”

Asked whether the beach boys were gigolos, another Western woman interviewed for the documentary added: “No I don’t think they’re really gigolos. I just think they love women and there’s nothing wrong about that, and when you’re here and when you have a boyfriend it’s for real”.

Police spokesman Sugianyar admitted it would be difficult proving any prostitution charges against the detained “cowboys”.

“Like many places in the world, there are indications of male prostitution in Bali. This has been happening for some time but it’s hard to prove as the men are discreet,” he told AFP.

“They don’t have sex on the beach, they do it elsewhere. The beach is only a meeting place for them and their potential clients.

“We can’t get rid of them 100 percent. There’s a supply because there’s a demand. It takes two hands to clap.

Back to Baghdad? Recovering Iraq to emerge as 'exciting' new tourist destination

REPORTER

Historical riches: Iraq boasts fine archaeological sites, including the Ishtar Gate in Babylon

It is unlikely to be high up on your list of holiday destinations for summer 2011, but Iraq is poised to become a tourism hotspot, according to a travel industry report.

Tourism in the troubled Middle Eastern stat is growing rapidly, with airline and hotel capacity on the increase, according to the report released at World Travel Market, a major travel conference being held in London.

Millions of pounds have been invested in Iraq’s tourism infrastructure since the end of the US-led war in 2003.

Seven hundred new hotels are expected to have opened in the country by 2014.
Airlines, including Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines, have also started flying to the Middle Eastern country.

Iraq boasts some of the finest archaeological sites in the world and some of the holiest places in Islam.

From the ruins of Babylon to the historical riches of Baghdad, it is one the ancient cradles of civilization.

Last year, 1.3 million people visited Iraq. The majority were religious tourists, mainly from Iran.

World Travel Market Chairman Fiona Jeffery said: ‘Iraq is a diverse mix of history, culture and unique experiences all paving the way for its place as an exciting up and coming destination.’

The only UK travel company currently offering tours of the country is Hinterland Travel, based in Brighouse, West Yorkshire.

They offer a post-war tour of Iraq - or Mesopotamia, as they prefer to call it in their on-line brochure.

The tours cost between £1,780 and £2,800 and include the war-scarred capital Baghdad, and Basra, the scene of some of the heaviest fighting in the 2003 invasion.

Previously off-limits: Current tours of Iraq include Saddam Hussein's former palaces in Tikrit

The trips also include Ur, believed to be the birthplace of the prophet Abraham; Babylon, once the greatest city on earth; and Samarra, famous for its golden domed al-Askari shrine.

The firm's website states: 'The present situation in Mesopotamia has improved vastly this year and we have successfully operated several tours. We have added some previously off limit sites to our itinerary, notably Nimrud, and explored Tikrit more thoroughly. The palaces of Saddam Hussein are included and many other sites.’

The firm's managing director Geoff Hann, who has run tours to Iraq for over thirty years, said: 'We keep out of the way and don't attract attention, that's the safest way to travel anywhere.

'We specialise in history and archaeology. Tourism is in its infancy after the problems of recent years, but the sites are worth seeing and this really is where civilisation began.'

Iraq was a hugely popular holiday destination for visitors from countries such as Japan, France and Germany as well as the UK before Saddam Hussein went to war with Iran in 1980.

Britons are currently advised by the Foreign Office not to visit Iraq because of the high threat of terrorism and the risk of kidnapping, with the exception of a handful of provinces.

Soaring Spain: Palaces, plazas and a perfect weekend in Toledo, Madrid's little brother

JENNY COAD

Head for heights: Toledo's Alacazar palace now houses a museum of military history

The people of Toledo don't stay in on a Saturday night. Even the grannies are out and about, nattering over tapas, their improbably amber-coloured hair neatly in place, purple and red blazers firmly pressed. The teenage girls are herding up the boys in the Plaza de Zocodover, and attractive couples drift across in frills and military finery - they've been to a smart wedding in the cathedral.

My friend Jo and I are watching the action on this bubbly square in Spain over a jug of sangria. The verdict - aren't those girls in their hotpants chilly? Only Spanish women can get away with flamenco-esque dresses - and it doesn't matter what you look like if you're in uniform.

Toledo is impossibly good-looking, all handsome stone buildings, warm-hued tiles and impressive spires. And it attracts dozens of admirers. We are here for the weekend, which involves flying to Madrid and then only an hour's drive south.

The Parador Toledo, which overlooks the city from its perch on Emperor's hill, is a perfectly located place to stay. It does require a taxi ride into town, but proves a wonderful way to contemplate the city, whether it's basking in the brisk morning sun or glowing at night.

This parador, with its moorish tiling and generous spaces, is a converted manor; others are in monasteries, castles, palaces and convents around Spain. All are renowned for their first-class service in historic surroundings.

Toledo is on the Tajo river, and the city rises up the hill to the Alcazar, a renaissance palace, with its Gothic cathedral right at the top. These are floodlit at night and look like glitzy fair attractions in what is the otherwise rocky, dry and beaten landscape of central Spain.

Once in the city, we lose all sense of where we are - and that's not just because of the sangria. The cobbled passageways give little away, and it's only when you come across an impressive wall, belonging to one of the city's 20 churches or glimpse a turret through a gap in the houses that you can orientate yourself.

Toledo is a city I could happily explore aimlessly. Perhaps it's being in the sunshine or simply the soothing colours of the stones - no tarmac streets here. Yet there are sights it would be a sin to miss.

Religious observance: Toledo's cathedral is one of its most prominent sights

The Alcazar, newly renovated to house Madrid's National Army Museum, is one. It is Toledo's dominant landmark and has undergone a series of transformations, most recently with the addition of a side wing built around the 16th-century foundations.

The museum is full of military memorabilia, from the ethnographic finds of officers stationed in the Philippines and Pacific, which include vicious-looking harpoons from Tonga and ceremonial masks, to pistols inlaid with pearl. Toledo was famed for producing steel swords and you can even buy them in the many tourist shops. The beautifully decorated ones on display here seem at odds with their grisly purpose, although many, like the 'Blade of fantasy', were purely for ceremonial use.

Walking along the walls of the main palace, a perfectly turreted square, you get an idea of its huge size. And, from the north-facing courtyard, there is a wonderful view across Toledo's rooftops: as neat as the grannies' hairdos and a similar shade of rust.

You can also see the ornate facade of the Hospital y Museo de Santa Cruz, which is home to many works by El Greco, ancient tapestries and tiles which are still produced in traditional styles across Toledo.

The other great building is the cathedral. It's on lower ground than the Alcazar, but makes an equally imposing impression. The interior is appropriately dark and forbidding, but with an astonishing display of architectural and decorative wealth.

The fact that 88 pillars support the vaults should give you some idea of its scale.
By the south door, a giant fresco of St Christopher renders one an ant among saints.

And at the south end of the cathedral, you can imagine yourself inside a Baroque masterpiece as you gaze up into a panoply of angels, clouds and heavenly hosts.

Further riches are on display in galleries off the main building.

There are rings with jewels the size of 2p pieces, a wonderfully dark depiction of St John the Baptist by Caravaggio, works by El Greco and illuminations from a 13th-century Bible. An entire room is devoted to altarpieces and tapestry-like robes.

More sinister are the red-tasseled hats suspended above our heads at various points around the cathedral, each marking where a cardinal is buried. They hang until they literally decay into nothing.

By this point we're longing for light. Duty done, we slope off to a sunny cafe nearby.

Eating in Toledo is inexpensive: £10 will buy you a set lunch with wine. Tapas is an easy graze. Partridge is a local speciality; we try it as a pat&e.

A river runs past it: Toledo rears high on the banks of the River Tagus

There are the usual chorizo, cured hams and olives, all delicious. But beware - you will have to stand your ground and use your elbows if you want to get a table in the sun for lunch. The great British rules of queuing do not apply in Toledo. A Spanish friend tells me simply: 'We don't like to wait.' Quite.

In the evening you often can't order before 9pm, and if you do, you'll be eating alone. Better to soak up the last light of the day and wait for the restaurants to sizzle.

There are dozens of places to choose from. Alfilertios 24 is a buzzy, brick-lined bar/restaurant near the cathedral, and El Trebol is a popular place below the Alcazar.

By midnight the streets are quiet and the Parador on the hill quieter still. Nightlife here is over in a hurry, but it's more than fun while it lasts.

The Crafty Traveller: The secrets of enjoying a Santa Claus encounter

Huskie rides can be an exhilarating experience, but might not be suitable for you children

It’s hard to imagine a bigger Christmas treat than going to meet Santa in his home in Lapland. I’m not thinking of a fly-by-night, fake Lapland in the New Forest or West Midlands, but the real Finnish Lapland, a frozen winter wonderland of deep snow and pine forests above the Arctic Circle.

You need to catch the children at the right, impressionable age, and it’s expensive.
So you’re only likely to go once – and you therefore want to get it right. With the wide choice of options available, it’s easy to mess up.

I’ve gone on two pre-Christmas Lapland trips, and while one was magical, the other turned out to be a disaster. Here’s what you need to know:

Look for deals

Few families would regard flying the children out to Lapland in the run-up to Christmas as an essential holiday. Therefore, in these times of financial hardship, demand for Lapland trips has fallen, and tour operators have reduced their programmes.

Even so, the holiday companies are still struggling to sell all their Lapland holidays for this Dec ember – and that means there are deals to be had.

I’m looking at a discounted offer from Esprit Holidays for a three-day, two-night break in the first week of December. Including flights, accommodation and activities, for a family of four with children aged six and seven it comes to £1,600 – a reduction of about £470.

Expect more of the same from other companies – particularly if you leave booking until the very last minute.

Think twice about day trips

The most popular, and cheapest, way to do Lapland is there and back in a day. With Thomas Cook, a day package costs from £349 for adults, £319 for children.

But would you fly your family to Athens on a day trip? No, thought not. Well, flights from the UK to Lapland take around the same time as those to the Greek capital – about three-and-a-half hours. So that’s seven hours’ flying, added to which there will be another four hours checking in and hanging around in airports.

Moreover, with just an afternoon and early evening on the ground, activities will be pretty brief. And to fit everything in to one day, it will be exhausting – you’ll be up at the crack of dawn and back home at midnight, if you’re lucky.

Magic moment: Nothing beats the wonder of meeting the real Father Christmas at his home in snowy Finnish Lapland

One final point: day trips allow little wiggle room if things go wrong. Years ago, I embarked

on a day trip to Lapland, but we never actually got there – the plane had technical problems, and the resulting delay meant there wasn’t enough time in the day to complete the outing.

Still want to go on a day trip? Then bear in mind that some com panies, such as long-established Lapland specialists Can terbury Travel and Transun, offer more appealing-sounding day trips to destinations that are less commercialised than those used by their rivals.

These cost a bit more than the bog-standard day trips – with Canterbury, £440 for adults, £420 for children aged four to 11 – but may be worth the extra expense.

Take a short break instead

When I took my family on a three-night break to Lapland a couple of years ago, the highlight for all of us was not in fact meeting Father Christmas.

More memorable were the snow mobile and husky-dog rides, the tobogganing in the deep, pristine snow, and just being somewhere so otherworldly, where in the middle of the day you get a blue-tinged twilight, and where it’s very, very cold.

To appreciate all this properly rather than fleetingly – and perhaps see the Northern Lights – you need to stay for a couple of nights or more.

Though short breaks are naturally more expensive than day trips, I think they are better value, especially if you are able to find a good deal.

An example: I’m looking at a Transun special offer on a three-night Sleigh Bells Ringing break,
which has an impressive amount included (all meals, lengthy husky and snowmobile rides), for £769 adults, £649 children.

Base yourself in a less commercialised resort

Rovaniemi, a small city with a Santa Claus village, has long been the heart of Finnish Lapland’s Santa industry. But these days, most tour operators offer packages to less urban parts of Lapland, where you’ll be better placed for the Arctic wilderness.

For example, Transun offers breaks to Karesuando, a picturesque one-hotel village on the Finnish/Swedish border. Canterbury Travel suggests heading to the tiny ski resort of Luosto, on the edge of a national park, if you want things to be as uncommercial as possible.

I stayed with my family in Saariselka (packages with Esprit Holidays), which is a bigger resort, but nonetheless charming and low-key.

Go when the children are the right age

The mercury in December in Lapland can drop as low as minus 25C, though a mere minus 10C

is more typical. You’re looking at very challenging temperatures for babies and toddlers.

Really little ones won’t necessarily enjoy the more full-on activities, such as husky rides – and of course they won’t remember a thing in years to come . . . On the other hand, if the children are over a certain age, they’ll be knowing and blasé about the whole Father Christmas thing.

Taking all of the above into account, I’d say the optimum age is between five and eight.

Analyse carefully what’s included in your package

Will you get a private audience with the big man in red? And will it be special? We were whisked off on a sledge to meet Santa and his elves in a hut in a forest.

Some holiday companies employ sleight of hand to get your child’s Christmas wish-list to the great man, which he then produces at the right moment in a magical flourish. Nordic Experience – another good bet for uncommercial Lapland trips – will even secretly arrange for your own pressie to end up with Santa.

Check exactly what other activities are covered in the package price. Some operators include things such as husky and snowmobile rides, and some don’t – and they’re expensive.

With First Choice, a husky outing costs £88 per adult (£58 per child), and a snowmobile adventure will set you back £74 per adult (£50 per child).

Get well kitted out

All Lapland tour operators provide lists of what clothing to bring, and what is provided (usually thermal Arctic suits and snow boots, thick socks and mittens, but check).

I suggest taking thermal underwear, balaclavas or hats with ear flaps, and waterproof gloves thin enough to go underneath the mittens.

When you arrive in Lapland and are getting kitted out, it’s all too easy to feel rushed and end up with wrong-sized gear.

Crucially, the boots need to be at least one size bigger than normal – the extra air inside them will serve as much-needed additional insulation.

Demi Lovato staying in Illinois rehab centre as family flies out to visit for the weekend

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Troubled: Demi Lovato has dropped out of her current touring schedule with the Jonas Brothers and entered a treatment centre in Illinois

Demi Lovato's family flew out this weekend to visit her at the Illinois rehab centre she checked herself into last week.

The 18-year-old is staying at the Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center, just outside Chicago.

And her mother, stepfather and two sisters made the trip from Los Angeles to spend the weekend with her.

The family stayed from Saturday until Sunday night, and brought the Disney star a guitar so she could practise while in rehab.

The Timberline website says: 'Our residents - adult women and adolescent girls - come to us when they need immediate, life-saving and life-changing help.

'Treatment is holistic, individualized, and nurturing.'

Demi entered rehab after an altercation with backup dancer Alex Welch on a flight in Peru.

She was on tour with the Jonas Brothers Live in Concert Tour when the confrontation occurred last week, and pictures have since emerged showing Welch sporting a bruised eye.

After the scuffle, the Disney star checked into rehab for 'emotional and physical' issues.

Family support: Demi's stepfather and manager Eddie De La Garza, mother Dianna and her half sister Madison de la Garza

According to People magazine, the singer became enraged with Welch after suspecting her of talking behind her back.

The source says,'As she did on most nights off, Demi invited her band, dancers and her parents to dinner.

'Afterwards, she broke off with a very small group.'

The next day, tour managers and Demi's stepfather, Eddie De La Garza, questioned Demi about the night having been informed that they had been partying.

Goofy star: Demi used to date fellow Disney star Joe Jonas

'When tour management found out about this, they talked to the people involved, including Demi', says the source.

'Demi reacted badly and perceived that someone on tour had told on her.'

She then confronted the girl in question whilst the group were on an aeroplane and there was a 'short, physical altercation' that was 'one-sided'.

Fellow teen star Selena Gomez has spoken out about the incident, saying that people are too quick to judge.

She says, 'You can't care [about reports like that]. It's really toxic what they do to girls in the industry.

'I don't think anybody should be mean because you never understand what's someone is going through. And it is partly [this] business, because it is crazy and hectic.

'So I think that nobody should be rude. If this were a normal person, you wouldn't be so judgemental. I feel like people shouldn't judge as much, they should give their sympathy.'

Lady Gaga and Miley Cirus storm Hollywood rich list: Half of top earners are under 30

By PAUL THOMPSON

Money no object: Lady Gaga, who is seen here performing tonight in Hungary, placed fourth on the Forbes list

Half of Hollywood’s top female earners are aged under 30.

Youth trumped experience as Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were named as the highest-grossing stars of last year.

Together they earned almost £200million to secure their place on the annual Forbes list of Hollywood’s top female stars.

Still at the top: Oprah Winfrey earned £203m to keep the chat show queen at the top of the pile

But even that sum could not match chat show queen Oprah Winfrey, 56, who earned £203million to keep her place at the top.

Miss Winfrey’s income came from her media empire and will be boosted in the New Year by the launch of her own TV network.

Beyoncé, 29, was second on the list with £56million, while 28-year-old Britney Spears was third with £41million.

Endorsement deals with companies ranging from Nintendo to L’Oréal and Beyoncé’s growing House of Deréon fashion line bring in millions a year on top of the £50million she grossed from a 90-plus date world tour.

Making music... and money: Taylor Swift and Beyonce both occupy the top ten

Moneybags: 17-year-old Miley Cirus has already earned £30m

Lady Gaga, 24, was fourth on the list with an income of £40million, pushing Madonna, 52, into fifth.

Madonna made £37.5million in 2009, thanks to the highest-grossing tour of the year.
She also benefits from royalties from her string of 1980s hits that were featured on the television series, Glee. Sandra Bullock is the only actress on the list, coming in at sixth with £37million.

Miss Cyrus, 17, is the youngest star in the top ten, earning £30million, followed by Miss Swift, 20, with £29million. Talk show host Ellen De Generes (£35million, seventh) and reality TV star Judge Judy (£29million, tenth) complete the top ten.
