Hello everybody

It has been a very long time since my last blog post and though my daughter Magali has been after me since a long time to write a blog post, I have been very very lazy.
After my husband arrived on 11th April from Brazil we packed our bags and left for Goa the same afternoon.
The time we spent in Goa really flew fast and we enjoyed our stay there especially at Haathi mahal at Mobor.
After coming back to Mumbai we spent 5 days at a resort here and I was in no mood to blog even though the internet was not disconnected at home. The little time I was at the computer was spent reading the newspapers and doing other things like checking mail and replying back.
We left for Kovalam Kerala with high hopes, because until this holiday we were lucky to have really great holidays in India and abroad. But I was really sorry that I had booked into a resort where the people as well as place was not really to our liking. Everyone in Kerala was out to take us for a ride and to add to it was the weather with Thunderstorms and heavy rain which forced us to spend our time in our room . We did not even have cable TV for 10 out of 14 days we were there at Kovalam. The only saving grace of the place was the scenic beauty.
Life is busy now as my husband is at home and is hungry all the while. So I spend time making some different things for him to eat. Even Magali has cooked a lot of food for him and he jokingly tells me not to get her married soon as she has to cook for him when he comes home. And sometimes when he is angry with her he tells her now that she is 18 years she can get married and go live separately.
Will try to take a tag a few days later.
Take care,

Cheap Holidays – Making Your Dream Holiday Abroad Possible

A cheap holidays vacation from time to time is a necessity in today’s world as a means of relief from the work stress and other pressures that life inflicts on us. The number of options in terms of destinations seems to be increasing everyday with the world coming closer, greater mobility and the tourism sector getting better and advanced in all places around the world. However, a good vacation still means spending a sizable amount of money taking into account the flight charges, accommodation and food costs and several other additional costs that are often not taken into consideration earlier. Thus, often we curb the desire within us to visit a place that we really want to visit after considering the expenditures attached with a luxurious holiday.

There are however, many opportunities to save money on a holiday as we often pay for things that we don’t really need which end up adding to our expenses. If the additional expenses can be controlled, we can be given more flexibility in choosing everything as we want on our vacation; we can cut a considerable part of the costs and enjoy a great holiday without digging too deep into our pockets. If the additional expenses can be controlled, we can be given more flexibility in choosing everything as we want on our vacation; we can cut a considerable part of the costs and enjoy a great holiday without digging too deep into our pockets. It is the lack in flexibility, high costs and unnecessary charges in standard travel packages that

cheap holidays

have come up as an alternative for people who want to enjoy good holidays economically.

The very purpose of many companies providing

cheap holidays

is to cut any unnecessary costs and provide the best possible services to customers at the lowest possible costs. These agencies try to reap economies of booking on a large scale and pass on the savings to the customers in the form of lower costs. They are all inclusive holidays that include flight and accommodation facilities and may include other facilities as well like car hiring services depending on the travel planner. Whenever there are a large number of bookings, the companies are often entitled to big discounts and savings in many other ways, which reduce per head cost of the vacationers and hence, the vacationers can enjoy lower prices. Thus, in this way the travel company offering

cheap holidays

tries to bring down the costs as much as possible.

However, there is hardly a lack of choice in cheap holidays. The companies may give you great flexibility in deciding how you wish to distribute your expenses. From the flight you want to take, the timings of your flight to the resort you prefer, you have all kinds of options to choose from. They often offer a comprehensive set of facilities, including many activities on a holiday that would be perfect for complete family entertainment.

Cheap holidays

are particularly good for travel abroad as vacations abroad are often the most expensive ones and yet the most longed-for. A visit to a country located on the other end of the globe earlier meant that you had to put down half of your life’s savings. With cheap holidays abroad, you can now fulfill your wish to visit faraway countries without putting too much burden on your finances. Start planning your visit to the place you always wanted to go to.

The Egypt of the Americas

Peru may be known for Machu Picchu. It may be pondered for the Nazca Lines. It might even be remembered for its supurb pollo with a drink of Inca Kola. Really though, Peru is still so much more.

3829578479 756b8b991e The Egypt of the Americas

We spent longer in Peru than we have spent in any other single country on our trip. We had intended to continue with our Spanish lessons but caught up in trying as hard as could to ‘see and do’ it all. We nearly got robbed on our entry into the country. We toured the ruins of pre Incan civilizations. We hiked at nearly 3 miles in altitude while suffering from Diarrhea and made it in and out of one of the world’s deepest canyons. Best of all we were visited by our friend Leah who joined us as we did the Salcantay Trek to Machu Picchu.

Before heading out to Bolivia though there was one more thing we just had to do. We’d fallen in love with Peruvian chicken long before we ever entered the country. While here we became enamoured with the rest of her cuisine from from lomo saltado to rocotto relleno.

Last up though was something very very important, Cuy.

3905357116 9e692bef5e The Egypt of the Americas

It really was fitting that Disney chose to release its G-Force movie about a bunch of crime fitting Guinea Pigs now so that we could watch it while we were here in Peru. Because for our last meal, that’s exactly what we ate.

Cuy is a delicacy here, one we first learned of while in Ecuador. Guinea pigs are indigenous to this region and have been cherished as a source of food and nutrition for millennium. Sure we enjoyed our Alpaca steak, rich in nutrients and low in fat like American Bison (one of our favorites and something we made sure to eat on our brief visit back to the USA in July) but that’s just not quite the same a cute and cuddly RODENT.

So we sought out an ordered. It came and we ate. We had been warned that it was very bony and did not contain much meat. There it sat on the plate, with a side of rice, some lettuce, and a couple of potatoes. We stared at it a bit, grossed ourselves out for a minute or two. The band in the restaurant continued to play and we continued to stare our formerly furry friend down. Finally forks went up and in we dug. To be honest, I think my pinky finger has more meat than I was able to pull off that carcass but we did manage a taste and to all of you wondering…tastes just like chicken.

To Bolivia (with our visas already in hand) we go!

Today is the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashana. It is our new year and one of the holiest days of the year. It is the day we take a moment, reflect on the events of the last year, and spend some time reflecting inwards. It is a spiritual holiday and one of growth and regeneration.

Current events couldn’t seem farther away from the description I just gave. Right now Israel is in a state of panic with the recent events in the Middle East and the Palestinian Authority is using this as an opportunity to seek statehood at the UN. It is hectic, and peace seems farther and farther away.

When we were in the Sinai Desert we sat one evening speaking to a Bedouin man who, not knowing we were Jewish, shared with us that he couldn’t understand the problems between Israel and it’s neighbors. He told us he felt the Israelis were his cousins, if not his brothers. This was the sentiment we felt throughout the Middle East and one of the reasons we felt so comfortable there. Despite the headlines and the extremists, most people want the same thing…peace.

On this day of spiritual growth we will pause to reflect on our experiences in the Middle East and how we might help to educate our friends and neighbors in our new community. The reason there is trouble there is that everyone wants the same chunk of land and everyone seems to have forgotten how to share.

Fewer Bulgarians to Spend Christmas Holidays Abroad

Bulgaria: Fewer Bulgarians to Spend Christmas Holidays Abroad
According to tour operators, more Bulgarians will prefer the local winter resorts for spending the Christmas holidays. Photo by BGNES

Fewer Bulgarians will travel abroad during the Christmas and New Year's holidays this year and they will prefer the country's opportunities for rural and mountain tourism, according to Bulgarian tour operators.

The reason for this tendency, which began last year, is the tough economic situation. However, it could also be explained with tourists' attempts to "escape" big resorts.

In general, the companies in the sector do not register a drop of prices, compared to the previous season, but the holiday packages they offer have become more diverse in terms of time and services.

The National Statistics Institute has been registering a decrease of trips abroad by Bulgarians by 20% to 40% in the different months. Even though official statistics does not show whether Bulgarian have redirected their trips to local places, tour operators believe that there has been an increase in the number of Bulgarians vacationing in the country.

This tendency could also be seen during the holidays. Data from the Sofia International Airport showed that tourist companies have booked less charter flights to warmer destinations. Tour operators have also stated that there are less offers and less demand for vacation in Greece and Turkey during the Christmas holidays.

At the moment, in Bulgaria the least number of offers are registered for the Black Sea resorts. Data from the Hotel and Restaurant Organization of Varna has showed that the interest for celebrating New Year's Eve in sea resorts is decreasing. Also, less Romanian tourists are expected than last year.

Prices of current offers vary from BGN 20 per night in small Black Sea hotels to BGN 250 in the bigger ones. Most of the offers are "all inclusive" and envision one or two nights.

Currently, places are available in almost all Black Sea resorts. According to tour operators, vacation packets are bought mostly by people who live in the neighboring towns and cities.

Places are also available in the winter resorts in Bulgaria. The prices vary from BGN 50 per night in family hotels in Bansko, for example, to BGN 1,500-2,000 for a one-week vacation in a luxurious hotel. These prices are comparable and even higher than vacations abroad.

This year most offers include two or three nights, which is due tot he fact that New Year's Eve celebrations are during the weekend.

Tour operators have stated that the offers that sold fastest were the ones for renting villas and houses in smaller mountain resorts and places for rural tourism, like the town of Troyan and villages near Veliko Tarnovo and Gabrovo.

There are no significant changes in their prices – about BGN 40-50 per person a day. The demand for them is big because they provide an opportunity for big companies to celebrate alone.

Memories of fantastic family holidays in Menorca

When I was young and family holidays abroad were rare, all of them, and I mean ALL of them, saw us visiting the Balearic island of Menorca. Something about the place captivated my parents, and so after our first trip there when I was just seven years old, as the years passed by we all became experts in what to see and where to go on the island.

For me as a child I found it a bit hard to understand why we kept returning year after year – don’t get me wrong, we rarely ever stayed in the same location– but looking back now with admittedly, rose tinted glasses, I can see what lured them back time after time.

For a start, Menorca is not a party island. It just isn’t. Sure, if you want a late drink and dare I say it, even a bit of a boogie, there will usually be somewhere in almost every resort to do so, but most other tourists that you chat to seem to be there just to enjoy the sunny, warm weather (dependant on when you travel of course), fantastic beaches, calm waters and general easy-going nature of the place, and all within a couple of hours reach of the UK – which is what makes it such an ideal family holiday destination.

Towns and resorts vary as you would expect from place to place, but we always found a hospitable welcome everywhere we went, even when I was a noisy, and somewhat bratty little girl, bickering with my big brother over which flavour ice cream we would have next, or who would get the last jammy doughnut.

We stayed in so many places, yet I remember them all perfectly – Arenal D’en Castell, Cala Blanca, Cala’n Blanes, S’Algar, Cala Santandria, Cala Galdana… the list goes on.

And so much did we enjoy the island that, although I swore I had eventually had enough of it, I visited again with my other half as an adult in my own right – this time staying in Son Parc.

And it’s not just the places we stayed – we hired a car and drove around the island countless times over the years, visiting some places more than once – the capital, Mahon is an absolute must – not least for its old narrow streets, 15th and 16th century architecture, world famous and extremely deep natural harbour and, a favourite for me (enjoyed only as a grown up of course!) the gin distillery!

Another must visit is the former capital city, Cuidadela. A real traditional Menorcan town, you can visit an abundance of shops, yet another impressive harbour, marvel at the 14th century cathedral that dominates the skyline and get some traditional Spanish food – you know it’s good when you’re sat sampling tapas with the locals!

Other fabulous places to recommend are Playa De Fornells, an old school fishing village where you can sample some of the most amazing locally caught fresh seafood; Monte Toro, the highest peak in Menorca at 357m; and Son Bou, which features the longest stretch of gorgeous sand on the island, at 3km in length! Even on a busy day you can find a quiet spot to relax and take in the sunshine and gentle blue seas.

I always thought I had had my fill of Menorca, but recalling my memories to write this, I think just maybe I could be convinced to go back again and refresh my memory...!

Kuta beach Bali

Kuta is located in the southern island of Bali, It is one of the major tourist attractions in Bali. This place was once a fishing village and developed into a tourist attractions.

Kuta Beach is a tourist attraction that has been chosen to spend the holidays. Beaches with white sand was chosen as a place to surf sports and also very suitable to relax while waiting for the beautiful sunset. Thousands of tourists are always crowded this beach
Don’t say ever been to Bali, if not go to Kuta Beach. Kuta Beach is famous beaches in Indonesia also abroad
Stretch of white sand and big waves will pamper you. Kuta Beach became a favorite place to enjoy the charm of the sunset, if you with a special friend, so romantic.

The bunks stop here

Garenin hostel on Lewis
Stone me ... Garenin hostel on Lewis

Pity the poor youth hostel. Established in the days when being young was synonymous with being hard up, what place do these cradles of healthy outdoor living have in an age where young people burn cash for fun and take six holidays abroad a year in accommodation as far removed from a bunkhouse as Clitheroe is from Klosters? It's little wonder that with a declining clientele the Youth Hostel Association has reinvented itself, poshed up, and gone all family friendly.

Three cheers, then, for the trend-bucking Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust and its quartet of no-frills crofters' cottages. The late Herbert Gatliff's philosophy, unchanged since he set up the organisation in 1961, is that hostels should be simple places where you can "cook a meal, dry clothes and enjoy the company of like-minded travellers". And it's a formula that still works: visitor numbers at the Gatliff hostels are up 50% since 2000.

Forming a chain from Lewis to South Uist, the rustic bunkhouses aim to provide stopping-off points every 40 miles or so for those wishing to explore the islands of north-west Scotland.

Travelling the islands is a simple affair nowadays, because what God has put asunder, man has largely joined together by a series of causeways. I set off from the south on my bicycle, coming first to Howmore, a hostel cowering beneath South Uist's two highest mountains and overlooking an ancient graveyard in which are strewn various mouldering chiefs of Clan Ranald. I talk with German-born Gaelophile Axel - something of a legend in these parts - whose mobile has a ringtone of himself singing a jaunty Gaelic-language reel about porridge. I know this because his phone goes off in the bunk below mine at seven the next morning. And then again at 10 past.

This is less riotously amusing than it might sound since I had not long gone to bed, having put the world to rights over copious cups of Rooibos tea prepared by Maggie, a Green Party councillor and "environmental philosopher" who has strong views about the islands' hedgehog eradication programme (they are considered pests because they eat the eggs of ground-nesting birds). The only hedgehog I see the next day on my way to Berneray has been squashed by a car, which seems an unscientific way of going about the business of eradication.

Berneray is a droplet of an island - just three miles by two - and its thatched stone hostel, which practically tumbles on to the beach, is as romantic as the hostellers at Howmore had promised. A few years ago a friend of mine met a Frenchman here and ended up marrying him. Tonight, however, I'm too weary to look for love at the local ceilidh so I stay in and chat to Kat, a young medical student, who regales me with tales of growing up in rural Cheshire as the only gay in the village.

Before I came to the Western Isles, I wondered whether, as a default-setting introvert, I would fit in with the "hostelling crowd". But after two nights it becomes apparent that there is really no such thing and that all human life is here (and some nights all nationalities, too). Hostels do seem to attract an above average number of larger-than-life characters, but no one frets if you just want to curl up in a corner with a book - though it is viewed as rather bad form to curl up with a DVD player.

On the subject of technology, it's a sobering thought that if you had visited the pretty coastal hamlet of Rhenigidale on Harris before 1980, you would have arrived before the national grid. Furthermore, you would have been obliged to walk or sail in because it wasn't until 1989 that the EU kindly built the residents a road. Even today, it feels like the village at the end of the world. I arrive as the rain is stottin' doon, and the smoke from the hostel chimney is a welcome sight.

Better still, Susan and Fiona, two charming young women from Edinburgh, take pity on my wretched state ("poor wee bedraggled thing" were, I believe, their words) and give me some of their delicious vegetable chilli, ply me with wine and cheer me up with stories about Malawi and probiotics. This is not the sort of thing that happens when you check into a hotel.

Over dinner, I ask them what there is to do in the Outer Hebrides. They say they are happy walking, looking at the sea and watching the wildlife (seals, otters and birds). If that sounds too mellow, the highlights to visit between hostels are the 2,000-year-old Dun Carloway tower, the prehistoric Standing Stones of Callanish, the hills of North Harris, the vast sandy beaches of western Harris, Flora MacDonald's birthplace, Ormiclate Castle, and, for location-baggers, Taransay, setting for the BBC's Castaway in 2000.

My last stop is in the west of Lewis at Garenin, Gatliff's northernmost outpost and a must for the would-be time traveller. The building is one of a village of restored traditional black houses (actually thatched houses painted brilliant white) that together form a living museum. The beach below faces west and when evening comes everyone piles out to watch the sun plop daintily into the sea.

So, if it's so idyllic, why aren't we all doing it? Well, at £9 per night (£6 for under-18s), there are some drawbacks to hostel living. The one shower and two toilets can be busy in the mornings, and not everyone is overjoyed at the prospect of mixed-sex bunk-bedded dorms. At times there's also what might be termed an understated attitude to issues of health and safety. Oh, and you can't book - though "you are unlikely to be turned away" (there are emergency mattresses for when space is tight).

But these minor discomforts should be set against the extraordinary sense of camaraderie; the countless instances of small kindnesses; and the fact that every night each hostel turns into an impromptu bar, with people cracking open bottles of wine or whisky or, more often than not, simply brewing up and settling down to the lost art of conversation (or, if Axel is around, the nearly lost art of Gaelic folk singing). The hostel is dead. Long live the hostel.

The French Riviera: The Island of Port-Cros

Paradise found…

We decided to go chic camping on the French Riviera during the peak summer season. Although we had embarked on this glorious adventure without a map nor reservations of any kind, I had highlighted a few destinations and a general itinerary.

I had read about the Porquerolles islands and we planned on visiting the main one. However, upon checking in at the four-star International Campsite on Hyeres, we were advised to explore Port-Cros instead.

The main Porquerolles island is quite touristy and it is a 20 minute walk to the nearest beach. Port-Cros, on the other hand, is a marine reserve natural park with few people and amazing underwater views, therefore perfect for snorkelling. We drove to numerous ports on the peninsula of Hyeres in search of a boat. We wanted to rent one so we could explore the islands freely.

There are boats that one can rent for a day even without a skipper’s license. Unfortunately, it was a windy day, so these slower boats were not available.

Oh, what a view indeed!

Our only other option was to take a ferry. Different ports have different destinations. We took the ferry from the port city of Lavandou - a city that felt more like Florida than France.

The ferry made an eye-opening stop on the naturist Ile du Levant. We had not been previously informed so when the boat docked and we began to notice towels unwrap and garments fall, we felt as if we had sailed into the set of a porno flick. Penises, breasts and vaginae of all ages flashed before us. We saw nudity no matter where we averted our eyes – even the dogs looked naked. Although there was nothing vulgar about this nature-loving community, we were mostly surprised to experience it upon docking.

If this interests you, you can book your stay at the various B&Bs located on the island.

Hiking, Snorkelling and so much to explore…

The Island of Port-Cros is a natural marine reserve. Although there is a small port with two B&Bs, some restaurants, bars and a small grocery store, the rest of the island is an uninhabited park. There are walking paths which lead to various desolate beaches where you can snorkel amongst the kind of fish that are rarely ever given the opportunity to grow so large.

Once we made sure we had enough water and food for the day, we headed to one of the rocky jagged edges and jumped into the glorious sea. There are some shallow beaches, but the rocks are a bit sharp and can slice your foot open if you step on the wrong one, which my boyfriend managed to do.

The moment you dive in, you are surrounded by enormous fish. We spotted more starfish in one gaze than the number of Starbucks Coffee Shops on a New York city block. Within moments we came across a two-foot-long octopus glaring at us with his meanest scowl. We chased a few giant fish around and spent the rest of our time enjoying the natural aquarium.

While several paths leading to the beaches are always open, the internal park is closed during the hot, dry, summer months, due to the high risk of forest fires. We were unaffected by this little limitation since there is so much which remains to be explored. We had been warned to pack a lunch and were very pleased with our delicious sandwich of Merguez sausage, Brie cheese and black olive tapenade on a freshly-baked crunchy baguette. Everyone we spoke to told us that there was nothing but a park on the island. We had been misinformed for there are a couple of bars and restaurants but your choice is limited and slightly over-priced. We also found a small grocery store hidden behind the main beach-front strip.

Had we known there were bed & breakfast inns on the island, we would have tried to book a stay. This island was like a paradise for us. We would have loved to explore the island’s various beaches. Although Lavandou offered the earliest and latest ferries, having wasted precious time in search of a boat rental, we were limited to only three hours on the island. The last ferry from Port-Cros left at 7pm. It left us wanting more therefore, we will certainly return to this paradise. It was an absolute dream.

The French Riviera: Cassis et les Calanques

The South of France is exquisite and the most picturesque town we found and fell in love with was Cassis. Cassis is not only a lovely romantic sea-side town with a port but it also features some glorious beaches on each of its Calanques, which you can explore by land or sea.

The Calanques

Each Calanque is an inlet in the form of a deep valley with steep rocky sides, which protrude into the sea. These long narrow bays can be considered Mediterranean fjords, which feature glorious beaches within each one. We spent two days exploring them, but one could easily spend a week and still want more.

Dining and strolling along the port

Not only were the beaches extraordinarily clean and simply dreamy, but the port offered several excellent restaurants for every budget. One night we ate at Chez something or other and had a very chic experience as we devoured a delicious Bouillabaisse while we enjoyed the delicate sea breeze.

The next night, we went shabby-chic with a melt-in-your-mouth steak and Roquefort baguette sandwich. As the baguette was at least two feet long, we thought we would split it, not imagining that we could possibly eat one each. However, the baguette is so light and delicate that one is simply not enough. The elegant woman behind the counter laughed at us when we returned for another sandwich. This time we tried the Special Marius (pronounced ma-rioh) sandwich which basically had everything on it. We chased it with lavender ice-cream and a side of Cassis sorbet. Hunger is now knocking.

Planning your stay

Although we travelled throughout the south of France in our car and stayed at local campsites while Chic Camping, we took notice of several beautiful places to stay for future visits. If you have already read my article on Chic Camping, you will already know that we did not make any reservations and travelled without a map. We had a wonderful vacation and everything was beyond superb but I do have a few suggestions for Cassis.

Hotels and Bed & Breakfast Inns become completely booked during the summer, so plan ahead. If you plan on camping in Cassis, you should reserve. There is only one campsite in Cassis, Les Cigales, therefore we were lucky to find any space left. It is also a bit far to walk to the beach so I suggest you bring bicycles or get creative with parking your car. We went in reverse up a one-way street in order to find parking by the nearest beach. The following days we ventured toward the amazing Calanques.

The unexpected.

Cassis was perhaps the most delightful town we visited on our entire vacation. It featured excellent beaches with great snorkeling, a lively port bustling with visitors featuring excellent restaurants and a variety of charismatic shops.

While driving from one Calanque to another we decided to explore and followed one of the signs announcing La Route des Crêtes. As we drove further up the road, the city vanished, leaving a glorious park with ancient clay roads and the most exciting views of the Calanques that we had seen.

It was our last day at Cassis but we knew we would return again to enjoy all the city had to offer. This extraordinary gem of a town is perfect for a couple seeking a romantic backdrop or a group of friends who are thirsty for beauty.

With its refreshing sea, its extraordinary views, decadent cuisine and romantic setting, Cassis is a place that I long to see again and I simply cannot wait to return!

Blackpool’s bank holiday bonanza

Having worked in Blackpool for 4 years this news story made me cheer. Blackpool, having recently invested £350 million into regeneration projects, is set to benefit greatly from the double header of long bank holiday weekends.
Blackpool used to be the place to holiday but unfortunately more recently its popularity has waned with the emergence of cheap holidays abroad.

I am sure you will have seen the recent adverts for the Pleasure Beach, who have invested heavily and created a new 6 acre Nickelodeon Land. In addition the Tower has been revamped.
Last year, 13 million people visited the the resort and local businesses are hoping to top that figure this year. With the economy struggling and British weather rather nice this could happen.
